Tasting Notes

Average 85% whole bunch. Barrel sample. Scented and lifted with lovely aromatic purity. Open and fragrant. (We note that it is a fruit day.) Firm, compact texture. Ultra-pure and with dry finesse. Showing its finest today (Jeremy Seysses points out how much it changes from day to day). Just lovely. (JH)

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes bursts with aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, orange rind, cinnamon, peonies and rich soil tones. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, supple and succulent, with a fleshy and open-knit core that’s framed by melting tannins and lively acids, concluding with a perfumed finish.

The 2017 Gevrey-Chambertin Aux Combottes 1er Cru, which was slightly affected by hail, albeit affecting the canopy rather than the bunches, has an appealing, pure, quite airy bouquet of raspberry, bilberry and blackberry, just a touch of brine/seaweed emerging with time in the glass. The palate is nicely focused with sappy red fruit, well-judged acidity, and orange peel and hints of brown spice on the finish. While not as persistent as the 2016, this has good potential and seems to gain depth with aeration.
