33% new oak. Very rich and sweet, charming and round. Lots of fruit. Crackling and fairly rich. Racy.
Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027
One of the most impressive wines of the year, the 2011 Volnay Champans literally bristles with energy and tension. Dark red cherry and plum notes meld into crushed flowers and rocks in a pulsating Volnay endowed with crystalline precision and fabulous balance. Absolutely nothing is out of place in a wine that is totally alive and striking in its beauty.
Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036

The 2011 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans had been bottled two weeks prior to my visit. It has another well-defined bouquet with dark cherries, pomegranate and marine influences coming forth with aeration. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry with fine tannins that lend it fine symmetry. It is tightly-wound, more laconic than the Clos des Chene, the finish introspective at present but sure to mellow and open up with aeration. Drink 2015-2025.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025
