The wine dazzles with expressive inner perfume and sweet, refined tannins that frame the exquisite finish. This is another head-spinning, hugely promising Barolo from Scavino. Good full red. Enticing aromas of redcurrant, plum, mocha, spices and menthol. Supple on entry, then rather tightly wound for 2007, conveying a saline, rather clenched character. Finishes with substantial tannic clout and a faint dryness. This may be in a dumb stage today, but I can’t help but wonder where it can go with bottle aging. [Stephen Tanzer, 11/01/2013]

Saving the very best for last, the 2007 Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annunziata is a gorgeous expression, with towering varietal characteristics that casts a long shadow. There’s so much going on in the glass: Prune, blackberry, cassis, dried herbs and licorice are beautifully woven together. The wine is firm and crisp in the mouth with perfectly integrated tannins.
