Col d'Orcia
Col d’Orcia literally means the hill overlooking the Orcia River. The Orcia River marks the South West border of the Brunello di Montalcino territory and the name of the farm is intrinsically linked to the physical location were the vineyards are planted.
The property become the largest organic wine producing farm in the whole of Tuscany. Since August 27, 2010 the whole estate including vineyards, olive groves, other fields and even the gardens are farmed following exclusively organic agricultural practices. Falcon has been importing Col d’Orcia since the 2010 vintage and we’ve seen them go from strength to strength. The Brunello di Montalcino is traditionally aged using large Slavonian oak barrels for a full three years before being bottled and released 1 year later. Brunello Nastagio is the result of the long experience accumulated by Col d'Orcia in the development and management of the Sangiovese vineyard. Nastagio is also the result of the many Research chapters conducted over more than twenty years by Col d’Orcia with the University of Florence. The aging in Tonneaux (500 liters) oak barrels and then in the traditional large “botti” represent the meeting point between tradition and modernity preserving the essential aspect of longevity. In the heart of the estate, half way up the hill that overlooks the Orcia River, on a ridge gently sloping towards the South you can find the Poggio al Vento vineyard. The name literally means “windy hill” and this aspect in conjunction with the very unique soil composition of the area produce the exceptional Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento. The powerful yet elegant tannins delivered in the wines by this vineyard require a 4 year long aging in the traditional large oak barrels. After bottling the wine requires a further aging of 3 years before being presented to the market. Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento is produced only in the best vintages and represents one of the highest expressions of pure Sangiovese to be found in Montalcino. The Nearco is from Col d’Orcia vineyards, 55 % Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, 15% Syrah, 10% Cabernet. Separate ageing of the varieties and lots for 12 months in French oak barrels. In order to enhance the fruit, the Merlot cultivar is aged in 500 liters French oak tonneaux.I’ve enjoyed a variety of older vintages from the property with the 2001 Brunello Riserva my favourite. But in my opinion the real quality start with 2010 vintage which was brilliant and some great wines in 2013 and 2016.
